Who built it, and what they built
Mohit Tater is the CEO and founder of BlackBook Investments, a company that buys and operates profitable internet businesses. The firm also helps other investors put money into these digital assets. Based in Gurgaon, India, the company has grown to employ 25 people.
The business serves a diverse client base, though most are high-earning professionals like doctors, consultants, and lawyers, or entrepreneurs who have sold a company and want to diversify. BlackBook currently manages over $7.5m in assets and generates $175,000 per month in revenue.
Where the idea came from
In 2011, Mohit graduated and took a job at Zomato when the company was still in its early stages. He spent a year there handling various roles, from collecting restaurant menus to launching the product in five new cities. Despite the learning experience, he wanted to run his own business, inspired by reading Rich Dad Poor Dad.
After quitting without a concrete plan, he read The Four Hour WorkWeek and became fascinated with location-independent businesses. He tried blogging for a year but saw no traffic or income. Instead of giving up, he discovered Flippa in December 2012, a marketplace for buying and selling existing websites.
“I didn't want my work to dictate my lifestyle, I wanted the opposite of it.”
He purchased his first business for $2,500 using savings and a loan from his mother. It was a social media marketing agency that he turned around, quintupling its value before selling it for $12,500 just six months later. This success proved the model worked.
