Who built it, and what they built
Pragya Batra co-founded Quirksmith, a Bengaluru-based design company selling handcrafted silver jewelry and accessories. The brand's pieces carry meaning beyond decoration, weaving in Indian languages such as Hindi, Urdu, and Bengali along with poetry and motivational phrases.
Her sister and co-founder, Divya Batra, is a trained jewelry designer who graduated from NIFT, Gandhinagar. The two now partner with artisans across India, aiming to sustain the traditional silversmithing craft through their collections.
One signature piece, the Aham Brahamasmi earcuff and thumb ring, takes its name from a Sanskrit phrase about personal responsibility for one's own becoming.
Where the idea came from
Pragya describes herself as the family bookworm who loved mathematics, which led her to IIT Delhi, where she completed a Btech and MTech in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology in 2007. She then joined Bain & Company and spent eight years in strategy consulting, pausing to attend INSEAD in 2011-12.
In 2015, the sisters lived in the same city for the first time in 15 years, after Divya moved to Bangalore to run a design studio. Quirksmith began as their shared weekend project, selling a small line of silver jewelry at pop-up markets around the city.
At those markets, Pragya noticed shoppers returning again and again and actively seeking out their stall. That repeat interest on a tiny customer base convinced her the brand offered something distinctive enough to pursue full time.
