Who built it, and what they built
Pranesh Padmanabhan, 33, runs Studio 31, a Chennai-based wedding photography and film company he founded twelve years ago as a first-generation entrepreneur. The studio has been featured by premium publications in India.
The company shoots more than 350 weddings annually, and over 90% of its clients are NRIs who fly to India for their ceremonies. Annual revenue averages about a million dollars, and the founder credits the studio's customer experience as the main reason couples choose it in a market where that is rare.
Where the idea came from
Growing up in a large family, Pranesh attended many weddings and noticed that photographers and videographers were treated poorly despite being the only people preserving the event's memories. In India at the time, anyone who was not an engineer or a doctor was looked down on.
He identified four reasons for the disrespect: creatives did not know how to market themselves, many studio owners inherited the trade or started out of necessity, the lack of entry barriers diluted the profession's value, and very few entrepreneurs had succeeded in it. With over 30,000 weddings taking place in India every day, he saw an opening to build a respected, benchmark-setting brand.
“A problem will always have a solution. if there is no solution, then it's not a problem in the first place.”
