Who built it, and what they built
In 2011, Nishant Tripathi launched Dhobilite, an upscale web-based laundry and dry-cleaning venture. Customers can schedule pickups via the site, mobile app, or a phone call, and items ranging from clothing and household textiles to footwear and vehicles are collected from their doorstep and returned within two days.
The business serves both consumers and B2B clients, with revenue split evenly between dry cleaning and laundry. Its customer base includes bachelors, students, and homemakers who use the premium services.
Where the idea came from
Nishant reconnected with a longtime friend at a wedding in January 2011, and the two talked about going into business. Money problems forced them to drop a plan to open a gym, and after briefly weighing a handicrafts venture, the friend proposed laundry. Skeptical at first, Nishant looked into the prospects for laundry and dry cleaning across India and examined how the trade operated in more developed nations.
The research convinced them the path was less trodden in India with high future potential. Nishant had no laundry expertise, only a software background, so he spent the first four to five years understanding the market and experimenting before introducing any technology. He launched in Noida to test demand, then rolled out the app in 2015 after seeing traction.
He funded the venture with personal savings and a personal loan, starting with INR 10 lakhs in initial capital and later adding INR 40 lakhs more. Revenue generated by the business funded further expansion.
