Who built it, and what they built
Sumit Bansal runs TrumpExcel.com from Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India, teaching people how to use Microsoft Excel more effectively. The site combines written tutorials, videos, and paid online courses, and it operates as a one-person business.
The business earns money in three ways: course sales, display ads, and affiliate tools and courses. At the time of the founder's account, four Excel courses were on sale with more than 700 enrolled students.
Where the idea came from
In 2013, Sumit was working at a tech company where his daily job involved crunching data in spreadsheets and building reports and dashboards. He was already learning from other Excel blogs and YouTube videos when a co-worker mentioned The $100 Startup by Chris Guillebeau, a book featuring people earning money from their expertise, including two with Excel-based businesses.
He ordered the book, read it, and decided to start a blog about Excel spreadsheets as a possible side income. Knowing nothing about blogging, he opened a free Blogspot account and wrote about ten tutorials before moving to a self-hosted website.
“I didn’t make any money for 16 months, but I consistently pushed out content and videos.”
